Field investigations


NBTL probably has Norway's highest competence in the problem area of Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR), which is a chemical and physical deterioration process in concrete (also called Alkali Aggregate Reaction, AAR). We therefore undertake all types of investigations in this area; field investigation of structures- and aggregate deposits and laboratory analyses. Furthermore, we have expertise in other deterioration processes in concrete such as freeze-thaw, chloride initiated corrosion, carbonitisation and sulphate-attack (e.g. Thaumasite). We are specialists in undertaking condition- and damage analyses on concrete structures; e.g. for the assessment of damage degree and remaining service life. Humidity (water) is the most important parameter for all deterioration processes in concrete. Therefore, we offer humidity measurements on structures and in the laboratory, and gives guidance in remedial measures to reduce damages and to increase the remaining service life of the structure. For structures with corrosion problems we measure the chloride content in the concrete (chloride profiles) for the assessment of "critical chloride content", penetration depth and penetration speed (diffusion coefficient). 

Aggregate deposits:

We undertake the documentation of concrete aggregates, class P, with regard to the Norwegian Control Council’s new guidelines to "test results" and "total assessment of aggregate deposits" (including geological mapping).

Laboratory investigations


NBTL undertakes testing of fresh- and hardened concrete according to Norwegian and European standards (NS-EN). For special areas (e.g. Alkali Silica Reaction) we undertake testing according to international standards such as ASTM (American standard), CSA (Canadian standard) and RILEM methods. For new products and materials we can "tailor" a testing system, which suits the product and material, and requirements. NBTL has expertise in quality- and damage assessment of concrete using polarisation- and fluorescence microscopy (thin-section and polished concrete slabs) as well as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM/EDX/WDX). We undertake chloride analyses, chloride profiles and calculate diffusion coefficients. 

Aggregate (sand, gravel and rock):

NBTL undertakes testing of aggregate according to Norwegian and European standards (NS-EN) and methods from the Norwegian Control Council’s class P – concrete aggregate. For special areas (e.g. Alkali Silica Reaction) we undertake testing according to international standards such as ASTM, CSA and RILEM methods. We are specialists in petrographic analysis of aggregates and rock types for the assessment of alkali reactivity. We undertake various special investigations on geological materials e.g. XRD-analysis, XRF-analysis, DTA-analysis as well as various wet-chemistry analysis e.g. ICP-AAS and chloride.

Consultancy Services and R&D assignments

NBTL can offer consultancy services and R&D assignments related to concrete structures, concrete and geological materials. We are specialists in damage analysis e.g. Alkali Silica Reaction, humidity measurements in structures and petrographic analyses of concrete and aggregate. We can offer advice with regard to remedial measures and surface treatment of structures. We can offer guidance in the use of new CEN - standards and requirements.


NBTL is a knowledge-based company, which intends to be innovative in relation to concrete and aggregates as well as Service Life Management, maintenance and rehabilitation of concrete structures. NBTL wishes therefore to initiate and participate in Norwegian and International research projects.


NBTL is participating in a NORDTEST supported round robin test of European aggregates with regard to one of the new European standard (“freeze – thaw test”, NS-EN 1367-1 and NT BUILD 485) and a RILEM initiated International round robin test of the RILEM method AAR-4 "Accelerated concrete prism method for alkali reactivity”.
